What is periodontal disease therapy?

Treatment usually starts with scaling and root planing (a deep cleaning below the gumline) to remove hardened bacteria, followed by a maintenance schedule that keeps the infection from returning.

The most common signs are gums that bleed when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, tenderness or redness, gums that pull away from the teeth, or teeth that feel loose or have shifted. Many people have early gum disease with no pain at all, which is why we measure gum pockets at every comprehensive exam.

Does a deep cleaning hurt?

No. We fully numb the area we're treating, and most patients tell us it felt like a longer-than-usual cleaning. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterward is normal and responds well to over-the-counter pain relief.

How many visits does treatment take?

Most cases are treated over two visits — one side of the mouth per appointment — so you're never numb everywhere at once. We re-evaluate about six weeks later to measure how the gums responded before setting your maintenance interval.
